چکیده

Abstract A climatology of large, long-lived mesoscale convective systems (MCSs) over eastern South Africa for the extended austral summer (September-April) from 1985-2008 is presented. On average, 63 MCSs occur here in summer, but with considerable interannual variability frequency. The mainly between November and March, a December peak. This seasonal cycle MCS activity shown to coincide favorable CAPE vertical shear profiles across domain. Most tend along escarpment adjacent warm waters northern Agulhas Current nocturnal life cycle. Typically, initiation begins early afternoon, status reached mid-afternoon, maximum extent night termination around midnight or shortly thereafter. It found that most initiate land, ocean last longer than those develop land. results also show there are differences continental oceanic MCSs, containing two intraseasonal peaks (December April). There relatively strong positive relationship Southern Annular Mode (SAM) For late frequency appears related strength Mascarene High Mozambique Channel Trough which modulate inflow moisture into stability lower atmosphere region.

Mesoscale convective systems and critical clusters

Size distributions and other geometric properties of mesoscale convective systems (MCS), identified as clusters of adjacent pixels exceeding a precipitation threshold in satellite radar images, are examined with respect to a recently identified critical range of water vapor. Satellite microwave estimates of column water vapor and precipitation show that the onset of convection and precipitation...

Objective Classification of Tropical Mesoscale Convective Systems

A cluster analysis is applied to the mesoscale convective systems (MCSs) that developed in northern Australia and the surrounding oceans during six wet seasons (September–April) from 1995/96 to 2000/01. During this period, 13 585 MCSs were identified and tracked using an infrared channel (IR1) on the Japanese Meteorological Agency Geostationary Meteorological Satellite 5 (GMS5). Based on the li...

Variation of ionospheric slab thickness over South Africa

Ionospheric slab thickness is defined as the ratio of TEC to maximum electron density of the F-region (NmF2), proportional to the square of the F2-layer critical frequency (foF2). It is an important parameter in that it is linearly correlated with scale height of the ionosphere, which is related to electron density profile. It also reflects variation of the neutral temperature. Therefore, ionos...

Analysis of updraft velocity in mesoscale convective systems using satellite and WRF model simulations

Updraft vertical velocity is an important dynamical quantity which is strongly related to storm intensity and heavy precipitation. It can be calculated by direct observations, NWP model, and geostationary satellites which can provide the possibility of measuring this quantity with high temporal resolution. This research analyzed updraft velocity based on six derived parameters from INSAT3-D and...

Parameterization of Convective Clouds, Mesoscale Convective Systems, and Convective-Generated Clouds

This presentation is a summary of research progress supported under the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) project entitled "Parameterization of Convective Clouds, Mesoscale Convective Systems, and Con'o'ective-Generated Clouds." The approach used in this research is to perform explicit simulations of convective clouds and mesoscale convective systems for well-documented observed cases. Th...
